Creating a Kitchen Wish List

If you're considering a new kitchen, planning ahead is essential to ensuring that you get everything you desire at a price that suits you.

Our design specialists will create your perfect kitchen, whether you're updating an existing one, planning a new layout, or embarking on a kitchen extension.

Our latest blog discusses important factors to consider before meeting with a designer to finalise your plans.

Assess your current kitchen.

Start by taking a notepad and walking through your current kitchen. Identify what works and what doesn't on a daily basis. List any frustrations with the layout, storage, appliance positions, and worktop space.

Focus on functionality for now rather than style.

Do you have difficult-to-access corner cupboards? Is there sufficient space for recycling? Do you have enough prep space and adequate task lighting over the worktops, hob, and sink?

Evaluate the working triangle—the oven or hob, fridge, and sink should form a triangle with 1.2m to 2.4m between each point. Is it convenient to move between them while cooking, or would rearranging these elements improve functionality? Also, consider the accessibility of your dishwasher and bin.

Identify what works well.

After noting the issues, consider what currently works well. Think about any aspects of your kitchen you're particularly satisfied with, like appliance positions, worktop length, lighting, or storage. Observing this while using the kitchen is helpful, so keep a notepad handy when cooking.

Reflect on kitchens you've used elsewhere that left a positive impression. What features made them enjoyable to use?

Next, think about any appliances or gadgets that would enhance your lifestyle. For example, a boiling water tap for instant hot water, a venting hob for integrated extraction, a steam oven for healthy cooking, or a built-in coffee machine for entertaining. Make a list of everything you'd like in your new kitchen.

Consider multifunctionality.

Will your new kitchen be solely for cooking and dining, or do you also want a space for family relaxation and entertaining? If space permits, consider adding a sofa area or an island for extra storage, prep space, and casual dining with bar stools.

Would an island suffice for dining, or do you also need a dining table? Is having a space for children's homework or working from home important? Our experts will design the perfect kitchen to meet all your lifestyle needs.

Think about maintenance.

Another crucial aspect is how durable and easy to clean you want your new kitchen to be. This will influence your choice of cabinet doors, worktops, splashbacks, and appliances. A handleless matt kitchen with flush-fit appliances, touch controls, and seamless worktops, sinks, and splashbacks might be ideal for an easy-clean solution.

Consider this when selecting flooring, as some materials are easier to maintain than others. Our designers can guide you on the pros and cons of various options.
